Among Fads and (a semi-review of) Harry Potter 3

I wrote this yesterday (June 2) evening. So let's just say it's yesterday evening ;)

I woke up at 8:00 in the morn today then slept again. I finally woke up at 10:00 AM and went online. All I did was register a new account for the zine's web space, check my email and drop by MX and GP. It's a shame I am somehow addicted to these forums because even though there isn't much threads to reply to I keep on refreshing the page and dig for threads to post in here and there. I left off at about quarter to 12, took a shower and went out to meet my dear friend Ayisse.

We went to the Harry Potter exhibit at Shang-rila. It was somewhat fun to see the set although there was supposed to be an activity for the whole thing, which we unfortunately couldn't stay for. We saw a bunch of newly issued (I think) HP watches. Some were actually cool. The antique looking ones with an HP-embossed brass cover. To our premature delight, the Cinema were alread opened so we checked to see the schedule. Unfortunately, after contemplating by ourselves for about 10 minutes, we decided to go to another nearby mall and watch there instead. Since it's a reserved sitting cinema and the earliest showing is not until 5:00 pm, which is a little late already.

So there, we spent another 20 minutes trying to find a form of transportation to Robinson's Galleria. We wanted to ride a jeepney but turns out there are none (imagine our frustration and surprise). There were only filthy unairconditioned busses with seemingly dangerous/untrustworthy passengers. There were no mega taxis as well (commonly and mistakenly called as FX). We ended up riding a taxi anyway. What a waste of 20 minutes.

Upon arrival in the said mall's theaters we were of mixed joy (because we finally get to watch) and awe/fear/disdain/amusement for the most part because of the people there. We knew anyway that the place is going to be teeming with "cool" fad-victim teenagers who were all about being seen with the cool crowd and with the latest clothes. I wanted to retreat in a corner or barf infront all of them. I brought my digicam which we were supposed to use to take pictures of fad-overloaded people, which I was quite shy to do at first. I mean, isn't it a little weird to take pictures of random people at a mall!? When Ayisse has finally convinced me to do so we found out that my forgetful, ditzy self forgot to put in the memory card. Sadly, no material for us.

It was funny how the whole thing looked like. When we were at the other mall where the HP exhibit was held, we ran away whenever we met a group of these poor fad-overloaded people who spoke "taglish" (tagalog/filipino mixed with english) and wore the same shirts, only of different colors each). When we went to Galleria, there was no escape. We knew what was coming but it's all too vivid when you're actually there. Even though the human brain's extent is vast, for lack of a better word, and unknown, when it comes to these things... the sight you're about to see is unimaginable (okay, maybe I'm just exaggerating).

It's grander (in a negative way) when you're actually there. You know, people going around strictly in either big groups or in pairs (all of them were dating couples though, I think we're the only ones who's a pair but aren't "couples"). There was even a chinese-filipino couple walking around who are either narcissists or incestual because they look very much alike. It is also the only place to date where I saw more pink than I thought I'll ever see in a lifetime. Behind us in line was another group of people and one of them (the guy who bought got left and bought their tickets) looks like Chris Caraba (is that how his name is spelt? meh. I don't know, I don't listen to Dashboard Confessional.) I only saw him briefly from the side when we left the line after getting our tickets. I don't know. Maybe he does. He has side burns and gelled hair...that was all I noticed (as Kyan Douglas said, "Gel is so 1984" haha). Apparently my dear friend was in love. Just kidding.

It was another 5-10 minutes of contemplation on wether to jump to another mall (whose theaters we don't quite prefer) or go take the reserved sitting show at Shang instead. We ended up lining up to find out that all seats were already full (which was a little of a lie because we got seats anyway when we got in). It was a little funny because when we first walked in to find seats we were stuck down the aisle in the middle asking if there were already people sitting down on the "empty" seats. Well, I enjoy being the loser idiot I am in public.

[start movie review]

The movie was surprisingly good. It was better than the other two. More artistc, the shots were better and we (Ayisse and I) can't help associating some scenes/manners in the movie to Y Tu Mama Tambien, which Alfonso Cuaron directed as well in the past. And hey, it fit somewhat a little, both movies have 2 men and a female for main characters hahahaha. I would have to congratulate Daniel Radcliffe for the definitely improved acting. He wasn't being an emotionless stick figure anymore. Emma Watson was successfully able to portray Hermione's smartness and cleverness not only inside the classroom. Rupert Grint was effective and funny as well. And I would have to say that Oliver and James Phelps look even better with longer hair. hahahahaha I mean, it was just surprising, I didn't foresee that! (Even though I know that Rupert Grint has already grown a mop.)

The idea of the students wearing casual clothes weren't all that bad as well. I actually found it more real. I feel that people could relate more. And they weren't wearing casual clothes all the time anyway. I also think that it looks more better that the students were more "casual" with the way they wore their uniforms. You know, they are no longer tucked in all the time, their ties were loose and their sleeves rolled up a bit. It lessened the prim and proper image which I found to have a good effect on the movie. As I mentioned before, it looks more realistic. It's as if you could reach out to the characters more.

The background music used for the most part of the movie was a little flat though. It was whimsical most of the time. The "scarier" or "thrilling" parts could have made use of stronger music with a fatter bass so that it went "boom boom boom" with your heart's "thump thump thump" (sorry, couldn't find any other way to descrieb it). The music on some of the scenes didn't convey the feeling of the scene or enhance it's vibe at all. And as always, there was the usual vearing away from the book. I guess they couldn't help that. At least they finally, finally made Harry Potter's hair look disheveled so it did give the impression that it's unmanageable. Unlike in the first two parts wherein it was properly combed :-/ And one question...do guys pillow fight? Because the 3rd year Gryffindor boys did in the movie.

That would be all for my informal review of the movie.

[/end movie review]

The adventure ends there. More to come. I know... my discusson was a bit shallow but hey, it's unmistakeably a huge part of society. Fads.
